01. What is RAMNet?

"RAMNet" an acronym for Remote Access Metropolitan Network, is an affordable & competitive access mechanism for Internet, Telephony, Video and Audio services.

RAMNet is branded as WICE.MAN brings broadband access to homes and offices at an affordable cost to access Information, Communication, and Entertainment (ICE) services. RAMNet is a technology developed for the Convergence.

02. What is the physical topology of RAMNet?

RAMNet is a hierarchical fault tolerant loop of loop network. The lower level loop operating over copper and the higher level loops operating over the optical media.

03. How RAMNet supports multiple services?

RAMNet creates a Permanent Virtual Circuit (PVC) for each service that is accessed by an end-user. The Quality of Service (QoS) is independently controllable. Because of this RAMNet is able to cater to multiple services which require bursty data traffic to synchronize multimedia traffic.

04. What kind of services the end user can access?

[1] Internet Access.

Choice of Internet Service Provider (ISP).

User selectable QoS service like BW contention ratio etc.

Pay as per usage of the service based on the quality of service used.   Quality available from Dial-up to leased line quality.

[2] Video.

View a selected Bouquet of channels.

Pay Per View

Pay as per View.

User selectable scene level censoring depending on the scene content.

Recording of the channel - doing away the need of VCR and PVR.

Video on Demand for playing the stored movies with full control like fast   forward, rewind etc doing away the need for a video library and VCR/VCD   player or DVD player.

[3] Audio.

MP3.

Dolby/DTS.

Juke box.

Broadcast audio stations.

[4] Gaming.

Single user games.

Multiple user games.

Multiple/groups located remotely.

[5] Local e-commerce.

Demo on demand.

Walk through malls.

Virtual reality.

05. Are these services offered by DiviNet?

No, DiviNet is a infrastructure and technology provider and not a service provider. The services are all hosted by DiviNet and the services are run by third parties.

06. Can there be multiple service providers of the same service?

Yes. RAMNet supports multiple service providers of the same service simultaneously. The issues like copy right, the service quality, service related customer care etc. are the responsibility of the respective service providers. The end-users have the freedom to choose the service provider of his/her liking.

07. Are these services accessed nation wide?

No. The RAMNet is a Metropolitan Network (MAN). The network is restricted within a City. The services are hosted at central location and are accessed by the users in that city. The services have to be replicated in each city. The services can be replicated across multiple cities using the WAN technologies, if required.

08. How do you compare RAMNet with DSL technology?

In India DSL is not deployed by Telephone companies (Telcos) as it is normally done in other parts of the world. You still need to create a new infrastructure.

Scalable bandwidth and/or bandwidth on demand is not possible.
Very high capital cost and cost per port. This coexists with Telcos infrastructure. ADSL gives a max of 6 Mbps up and 1 Mbps downstream. VDSL provides a speed upto 56 Mbps, this requires Fiber connection to the curb and copper in the last mile.
The connections have to be made within a radius of 5 KM from the exchange/DSLAM.

Difficult to cover fringe areas and clean-ups required.

Difficult to provide multi-cast services.

09. How do you compare RAMNet with Cable Modem Technology?

Deployed using the cable TV infrastructure

Shared bandwidth with asymmetric high speeds upto 30 Mbps   downstream and Two Mbps upstream

Service provided only through a cable network

Upgrades required to cable infrastructure, before broadband - - Internet   becomes available.

Noise funneling in HFC

Great for multi-casting, but relies on encryption for security

Costly end user equipments and subscription charges10. What are the   killer applications?

Broadband Access.

Programmable Bandwidth per user. Bandwidth management using native   bandwidth management.

Video/Audio on demand.

Telephony .

E-commerce applications .

10. What is our response for Voice over IP?

It is good for DiviNet; at present there are lots of legalities involved to provide Voice related services. Local Telephony can be made available to the customer at affordable costs.

11. Why user should prefer RAMNet?

With the existing technologies:
Customer has to make an additional investment for telephone modem etc., Speed is never guaranteed. Always speed depends on the quality of line. Telephone line is engages as long as one is connected to the net. Multiple services are not being offered.

With RAMNet:

Replaces the Telephone line.

No question of line dropping, as telephone is not required.

Can convert a connection into a broadband connection at the click of a   button.

Enables the customer to access other services and not restricted to   Internet only. Other services like: Video on Demand, Audio on Demand,   Interactive Gaming e-commerce applications etc…

No additional investments for additional services.

Future: Telephony @ affordable cost.

Recurring Telephone will be less.

12. Why ISP should prefer RAMNet?

No capital Investments towards RAS. (Which is about $150 ~ 200 per   point).

No capital Investment towards E1/R2 (BSNL).

Additional Investment towards the Hardware required for E1/R2 is also   eliminated

No waiting period for getting E1/R2.

No requirement of E1/R2 from different exchanges.

No load balancing problems (explain)

Can offer lease lines / Broadband internet access to any customer   connected to RAMNet.

Possible of introducing new services / Service Level Agreements (SLA)   Quality of Service (QoS) with this infrastructure.

13. What is the difference between today's broadband offering and RAMNet?

Today's broadband offering gives you a fixed Bandwidth.

Manageable Bandwidth / Bandwidth on demand is not possible in many   cases.

You need to pay for the Bandwidth even when you are not using the   same.

RAMNet offers multiple services.

Video on Demand is a reality with this technology. (Other service   providers are talking about (NVoD).

14. How it is different from Web TV box?

Web TV box is an inter-phase box. It replaces the modem. With this box you still require a telephone connection. The only advantage is it can be connected to TV instead of computer. You can browse the net. but can be used only for e-mail applications. Information storage is not possible as there is no built in CPU. Web TV box cannot support multiple services.
